Our Step-by-Step Spring Manufacturing Process

Wermke Springs follows a meticulous spring engineering approach that ensures every spring we create meets the highest performance and reliability standards. From ramp springs to custom coil springs, our process helps us create top-notch springs of all kinds.

While the process can be customized according to unique specifications, the following is a brief overview of our process.

Step One – Coiling with Precision

Our spring engineering process begins with the coiling process, a pivotal stage that sets the foundation for excellence. There are generally two coiling methods that most spring manufacturers follow. They include cold winding and hot winding.

Cold winding involves using wire at room temperature, expertly wound around a shaft to create the desired spring shape. On the other hand, hot winding is reserved for thicker wire. Here, the metal is heated to enhance its flexibility, coiled around a shaft while scorching hot, and swiftly immersed in cooling oil.

Step Two – Secondary Bending

After a spring is coiled there are a variety of secondary bending techniques that may be applied to meet specific design requirements. This is especially relevant in torsion springs and extension springs. Our team of experienced spring makers has the knowledge and the equipment to get this step done right.

Step Three – Heat Treatment

Once the coiling is done, the steel undergoes a meticulous hardening process. Coiling imparts stress into the wire, and the heat treatment alleviates it. Our springs are subjected to a controlled heating process in specialized ovens, maintaining precise temperatures and durations. Once that is done, the spring is set aside to cool slowly, ensuring it attains the necessary optimal hardness and resilience.

Step Four – Precision Setting

Achieving the right balance of functionality and stability is paramount. In this step of our spring manufacturing process, we compress our springs multiple times to achieve the desired results. We ensure that every coil is pressed firmly against its neighboring coils. This step guarantees that the spring meets its specified loads and maintains its intended length.

Step Five – Coating to Prevent Corrosion

The last step of our spring engineering process involves coating. We understand that durability is essential, especially in some demanding applications. To safeguard our springs from corrosion, we employ a robust variety of coating processes customized to your needs. The entire spring surface is carefully coated with liquid rubber, painted, or plated with protective metals like chromium or zinc per your specifications. This additional layer of defense ensures that our springs endure even in challenging environments.
